Coach Fredenburg began his career in Texas as a coach at several high schools including Canyon High School, New Braunfels High School, and Giddings High School. He has coached more than twenty players who have played professional football. After starting the UMHB football program in 1998, Fredenburg has compiled a 65-22 record in eight seasons as the only head coach in the history of the UMHB football program. The Crusaders were ASC Champions in 2005, and ASC Tri-Champions in 2003 after winning their first ASC Championship in 2002. The Crusaders also finished the 2004 season ranked 2nd in the nation in all three of the major Division III National Polls. Coach Fredenburg has coached four AFCA All-Americans, one Academic All-American, 27 All-Region selections, 114 All-Conference players, four Academic All-District VI players and 49 Academic All-Conference selections during his tenure at UMHB. The Crusaders have also earned four trips to the NCAA Division III Football Championships under Coach Fredenburg, claiming berths in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005.

He had a thirteen-year tenure at Baylor University as Defensive Coordinator and assistant head coach. After the job at Baylor, he then moved to Louisiana State University. He was named Southwest Conference Defensive Coach of the Year in 1990. After one year at LSU, he was given the opportunity to be the Defensive Coordinator at Louisiana Tech University. He remained there for three years.
